How to Create a Passport Photo

1. Take your photo: Stand in front of a plain white wall with even lighting on your face. Use a smartphone camera at eye level. Keep a neutral expression and look directly at the camera.
2. Upload to DocConvert: Open the Passport Photo Maker and upload your image.
3. Select size: Choose from preset sizes or enter custom dimensions with your required unit (cm, mm, inch, or pixel).
4. Set DPI: For print use, keep DPI at 300. For online-only submission, 150 DPI is sufficient.

Understanding DPI for Passport Photos

DPI (Dots Per Inch) determines how many pixels fit in one physical inch when printed. The relationship between DPI, physical size, and pixel dimensions is:

Pixels = Physical size (inches) x DPI

For example, a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo at 300 DPI requires:

• Width: 3.5 cm / 2.54 x 300 = 413 pixels
• Height: 4.5 cm / 2.54 x 300 = 531 pixels

AI Background Removal

DocConvert uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation, a machine learning model that runs directly in your browser, to detect the person in the photo and separate them from the background. This works best when:

• The subject is clearly visible and well-lit
• There is reasonable contrast between the person and background
• The photo shows head and shoulders (standard portrait framing)

After removing the original background, you can choose any solid colour to replace it. White is the standard for most passport applications.

If the AI does not work perfectly for your photo (complex backgrounds, unusual lighting), the tool falls back to a colour-matching algorithm that floods the background colour from the edges.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Face too small: Most passport standards require the face to occupy 70-80% of the photo height. Do not include too much space above the head or below the shoulders.
• Shadows on background: Stand at least 30 cm away from the wall to avoid casting shadows that make the background appear grey.
• Uneven lighting: One side of the face should not be significantly darker than the other. Use soft, frontal lighting.
• Glasses glare: Many agencies now prefer photos without glasses. If you must wear glasses, tilt your head slightly down to reduce reflections.
• Wrong aspect ratio: If you upload a landscape photo and crop it to passport ratio, you may lose too much of the image. Start with a portrait-orientation photo.

• Use 300 DPI output for sharp printed results
• Print on glossy or semi-glossy photo paper for best quality
