SSC CGL & CHSL Photo and Signature Upload Rules (2026)

The definitive guide to understanding official dimensions, file sizes, live webcam verification, and signature formatting for the new SSC portal (ssc.gov.in).

The New SSC Portal (ssc.gov.in) and Updated Upload Protocols

Following the transition of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to its upgraded online portal (ssc.gov.in) and One-Time Registration (OTR) system, photo and signature upload requirements have become significantly more stringent. Over 1.5 lakh application forms were rejected in recent examination cycles due to non-compliant digital uploads.

Whether you are registering for SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level), SSC CHSL (10+2), SSC MTS, SSC CPO, or SSC GD Constable, your documents must strictly adhere to the Commission's official notice parameters.

Live Photo Capture vs Pre-Uploaded Photograph Rules

Under the new SSC portal rules, candidates must fulfill a dual-stage photo verification protocol:

  • Stage 1: Real-Time Live Webcam Capture: The portal activates your smartphone or laptop webcam to take a live frontal portrait during form submission. You must ensure proper lighting, look directly into the camera lens, and ensure no family members or moving backgrounds appear in the frame.
  • Stage 2: Official Candidate Photo Upload: In the One-Time Registration (OTR) profile and admit card synchronization, a standardized high-resolution passport-style image (200 × 230 px, under 50 KB) must be maintained.

Top 6 Reasons SSC Rejects Candidate Photographs

  1. Wearing Spectacles or Glasses: Even clear reading glasses cause flash reflections that obscure pupils. The SSC notification explicitly states: "Photographs with spectacles will NOT be accepted." Always take your photo without glasses.
  2. Caps, Hats, or Headgear: Unless worn for established religious customs, headgear is strictly banned. Even religious coverings must not cast shadows over the forehead, temples, or cheeks.
  3. Cropped / Side-Angle Selfies: Selfies taken at tilted angles, photos showing only one ear, or casual travel pictures are immediately flagged by the automated filter.
  4. Blurry or Pixelated Scans: Photos smaller than 20 KB or stretched from tiny low-res files fail automated facial recognition.
  5. Harsh Backdrops & Shadows: Patterns, outdoor trees, textured wallpapers, or harsh shadows behind the head lead to rejection.
  6. Photo Too Dark or Overexposed: Ensure both sides of your face are evenly lit.

How to Prepare Your SSC Signature Correctly

Preparing a compliant signature for SSC requires special care because the file size ceiling is exceptionally tight (10 KB to 20 KB):

  • Paper & Ink: Use a clean sheet of unruled white A4 printer paper. Never sign on lined exercise books, as blue lines across your signature will cause portal rejection. Use a smooth black or dark blue ballpoint pen.
  • No Capital Letter Signatures: Signing your full name in all block capital letters (e.g., "RAHUL SHARMA") is prohibited by SSC guidelines. The signature must be your natural cursive or running hand.
  • Crop Tightly: Photograph the signature in bright daylight. Crop out all surrounding empty white paper before resizing. Leaving too much white margin shrinks the actual signature to an unreadable smudge.
  • Resize with DocConvert: Upload your cropped image to the DocConvert Signature Resizer, select the SSC preset (140 × 60 px, target 15 KB), and download the compliant JPG instantly.
