CGPA to Percentage Conversion: Formulas by Board & University

A comprehensive reference guide for converting Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) into equivalent percentage marks for CBSE, engineering colleges, and government job applications.

What is CGPA and Why Must You Convert It?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is an internationally recognized educational grading metric that represents the overall academic performance of a student across all completed semesters or academic terms. Instead of awarding raw numerical marks, institutions award letter grades corresponding to grade points on a standard 10-point scale.

However, when applying for Indian competitive exams (such as UPSC, SSC, IBPS, or CAT), multinational IT corporate placements (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture), or higher education admissions abroad, application forms strictly mandate providing an aggregate percentage (e.g., "Minimum 60% or 65% aggregate marks"). Because grading scales differ significantly across universities, using the wrong conversion formula can result in disqualification or incorrect placement ranking.

The Official CBSE 10-Point Scale Conversion Formula

For secondary and senior secondary school students under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the official statutory conversion formula is:

Percentage of Marks = CGPA × 9.5

Why Does CBSE Multiply by 9.5 Instead of 10?

Many students naturally assume that since CGPA is evaluated on a 10-point scale, a score of 8.0 CGPA should equal 80%. However, CBSE analyzed mark distributions over five consecutive academic years and observed that the average score attained by candidates scoring grade point 10 (A1 grade, 91–100 marks) was approximately 95 marks.

Consequently, CBSE established 9.5 as the scientifically validated statistical multiplier to convert 10-point grade bands into accurate percentage representations.

Subject-Wise Percentage Calculation (GP to Marks):

To determine your approximate percentage in an individual subject, multiply the Grade Point (GP) for that specific subject by 9.5:

Subject Percentage = Grade Point (GP) × 9.5

University-Wise CGPA to Percentage Conversion Formulas in India

Board / University Official Conversion Formula Example (8.0 CGPA)
CBSE (Class 10 / 12) Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 8.0 × 9.5 = 76.0%
Mumbai University (MU Engineering) Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11 (if CGPA ≥ 7.0) (7.1 × 8.0) + 11 = 67.8%
VTU (Visvesvaraya Tech University) Percentage = [CGPA − 0.75] × 10 (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%
Anna University (Tamil Nadu) Percentage = CGPA × 10 8.0 × 10 = 80.0%
KTU (APJ Abdul Kalam Tech University) Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 3.75 (8.0 × 10) − 3.75 = 76.25%
MAKAUT / WBUT (West Bengal) Percentage = [CGPA − 0.75] × 10 (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%
SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) Conversion table specified on mark-sheet back Approx 72.5% – 75.0%

CBSE CGPA to Percentage Quick Conversion Table

CGPA Score Formula Applied Equivalent Percentage Grade Equivalent
10.0 10.0 × 9.5 95.0% A1 (Outstanding)
9.6 9.6 × 9.5 91.2% A1 (Distinction)
9.2 9.2 × 9.5 87.4% A2 (First Class with Distinction)
8.8 8.8 × 9.5 83.6% A2 (First Class)
8.4 8.4 × 9.5 79.8% B1 (First Class)
8.0 8.0 × 9.5 76.0% B1 (First Class)
7.6 7.6 × 9.5 72.2% B2 (First Class)
7.2 7.2 × 9.5 68.4% B2 (First Class)
6.8 6.8 × 9.5 64.6% C1 (Second Class)
6.4 6.4 × 9.5 60.8% C1 (Second Class)
6.0 6.0 × 9.5 57.0% C2 (Second Class)
Important Verification Note: When entering percentage values on official job portals (such as UPSC, SSC, or IBPS), always refer to the reverse side of your official final university degree or transcript. If your university provides its own conversion formula on the mark sheet, you must legally use that university formula rather than the general CBSE 9.5 multiplier.
